Tiredness, headaches and a general lack of energy can be some of the first signs that your body is low on iron. Iron deficiency is widespread in India – especially among women – affecting over 50% of females between 15-49! Long-term iron deficiency can lead to iron deficiency anemia, with significant health issues.
Iron is an essential mineral with many important functions in the body, not least the transport of oxygen around your body. Iron is essential in the production of hemoglobin, a protein in your red blood cells, and one of the most important blood components. The oxygen you breathe in through your lungs binds to the hemoglobin enabling it to be transported to every part of your body. If you don’t get enough iron from your diet, your body can’t make sufficient vital hemoglobin.
Iron is an essential mineral – your body can’t make it, so you need to get it from your food. But if you eat little or no meat in your diet, you may not be getting enough.
Iron from animal products (heme iron) is of high quality because it is easily absorbed and utilised by the body. The best sources are lean meat, poultry and seafoods.
Although there are lots of plant-based food sources that are also high in iron (non-heme iron), it is another type of iron that is less easily absorbed by the body.
If you eat a vegan, vegetarian or low-meat diet, you can benefit from taking an iron supplement to make sure you are reaching the recommended daily intake.
