Skin care for men in their 20s
Focus: Preserve and protect
In your twenties your skin care routine should be all about prevention. If your skin looks great you may not feel you need to do anything, but just like the effort you put into your career – if you start now, it will pay off later.
If you’re not using skin care products yet, now is a great time to start! If you’ve been using skin care products for a while or stolen your girlfriend’s products, let’s make sure you have a routine suited to your skin. Men’s skin is oilier than women’s and sometimes experience breakouts, so a cleanser with salicylic acid is often a great way to start. It will cleanse and exfoliate the skin to unclog pores and keep oiliness at bay. After cleansing, use a toner to get rid of any last impurities, and then moisturise with a good mattifying moisturiser. Do your future 40-year-old a favour and use an SPF daily so that dark spots and wrinkles don’t surprise you later! Simple enough, right?
Skin care for men in their 30s
Focus: Slow down ageing process
In your 30s, your career is starting to take off, you may have young kids and experience many sleepless nights. You’ve got your routine down pat, but maybe you’ve found your skin care habits slowly slipping to the bottom of the priority list? We get it, but don’t give up now, after all you’ve worked to build up! In your 30s you may begin to notice your skin starting to age. It loses more moisture and produces less collagen, so you might start seeing some fine lines. Delicate skin around the eyes means it’s time to introduce an eye cream that works on bags, puffiness and dark circles, while preventing lines from developing into wrinkles. You may also want to update your basic routine to a proper anti-ageing routine designed for men, because an anti-ageing skin care routine actively works to protect against the formation of wrinkles and tired-looking skin. Active ingredients like baobab, plant stem cell extract and caffeine help reduce wrinkles, and improve smoothness and flexibility. Also, remember to keep using SPF! We suggest upgrading to one that is specifically designed to prevent ageing signs.
Skin care for men in their 40s
Focus: Maintain and slow down visible signs of ageing
By your 40s you may start to notice wrinkles even more, but if you’ve been diligent with your routine and SPF, your skin may still look and feel younger than your years! However, the slowed down collagen production that you may have started noticing in your thirties and loss of moisture becomes even more pronounced. You’ll also have a slower natural exfoliation process in the skin. So, on top of your anti-ageing routine, your skin may benefit from an alpha hydroxy acid peel (AHA) that promotes cellular regeneration and helps you improve your skin texture.
Skin care for men 50+
Focus: Fade sun damage, moisture
After 50, your skin produces less oil and more easily becomes dry. A mask with niacinamide that deeply replenishes your skin with moisture helps give your skin a youthful, hydrated and energised appearance. It’s also common to see some sun damage like dark spots and hyperpigmentation. To fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation, use an AHA blend for 10 minutes once a week. This exfoliates the upper layer of the skin and encourages cell renewal, as well as improves any rough skin texture and minimises the appearance of enlarged pores.
With these handy tips, you can elevate your routine (and bathroom cabinet) to keep your skin looking fly for the many decades ahead!
