Bone mineral density is continuously built from birth until your mid-20s, which is where it peaks. Between the ages of 30 and 50 it is important to minimise bone mineral density loss and support bone health. You slowly start to lose bone density after 40 and, for women, this loss speeds up dramatically at menopause that occurs around 50. Later in life, the loss slows back down again. 
 
The bones are the largest reservoir of calcium in the body and not reaching your dietary calcium requirements can lead to a reduction in bone mineral density over time. In addition to calcium, vitamin D and physical activity are also essential components to support bone health at all life stages.
