Charcoal 
Charcoal has long been celebrated for its purifying skin care benefits, especially when it comes to managing oily skin and blemishes. The charcoal in our Optimals Purifying Clay Face Mask is made from a very hard wood by way of a special burning technique. When the wood is burned, it forms micro pores on the surface of the charcoal particle, increasing the surface area. Higher surface area gives the charcoal its high adsorption power, which means that it can attract, trap, and adsorb (i.e. hold on to) other molecules. As such, the charcoal acts much like a magnet, drawing out and capturing impurities such as dirt, excess oil, or general daily grime from the surface of the skin – leaving skin looking and feeling purified and comfortable. 
Astringent Agents from White Nettle 
White Nettle Extract has long been used for its many medicinal benefits – in fact, the first use dates all the way back to the Middle Ages! The astringent agents in the mask come from saponosides in White Nettle, which have been shown to have astringent and decongesting benefits, and help to soothe, protect, and rebalance oily, blemish-prone skin. White Nettle is also rich in antioxidant compounds, including phenols, flavonoids, and tannins – not to mention its skin-soothing, microcirculation-boosting effects, that were used to promote a comfortable, even skin tone.

A moisturising powerhouse, shea butter is an ivory coloured natural fat, extracted from the shea tree’s nuts in its native Africa, where it’s been enjoyed as a beauty ingredient and cooking oil for thousands of years. The unctuous butter is a must-have ingredient in cosmetics today, thanks to its rich and intensely nourishing texture that is particularly compatible with our skin. In a cold climate like Sweden’s, shea butter’s exceptionally hydrating and restorative qualities are highly appreciated.

White nettles are rich in antioxidant compounds that give it anti-inflammatory properties, making white nettles a soothing ingredient in beauty and skin care. The wild plant also has astringent and decongesting properties that are very beneficial in helping to rebalance blemish-prone skin. A good source of vitamin A, white nettles are edible and unlike stinging green nettles, the young leaves can be consumed raw in salads.

The white willow tree’s bark has been used as a medicinal ingredient for thousands of years Its earliest use dates back to ancient Egypt where the bark was used to treat pain and inflammatory conditions like headaches, fever, toothache or back pain. In skin care, white willow bark is a fantastically soothing and purifying ingredient thanks to its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial compounds.

Salicylic acid is a renowned blemish fighter and regarded as an excellent ally for healthy-looking clear skin. It is a BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid), so exfoliates and smooths by clearing your skin of dead cells. Being oil soluble means Salicylic acid can reach inside the pore, cutting through the sebum (oil) and clear away pore clogging debris that can cause blemishes to develop.
