5 Ways to Make your Home Sustainable and Save Money!

There are so many different things you can do to live your life in a more environmentally sustainable way that there’s hardly any reason not to! No matter your budget or lifestyle, there’s something you can do to contribute to the sustainable movement – and it could even save you money! We’ve picked our five favourite tips to help you get started.

1. Out with the new, in with the renewed!
This is a great tip for achieving a more sustainable lifestyle approach, as well as cutting costs! If your sofa is looking a bit worse-for-wear, make a project out of it and give it a facelift – it’s likely that a fresh look will only cost a fraction of the price of a brand new sofa! Take a creative approach to decorating your home and try to repurpose what you already have.

2. A brighter way to save!
When we think about light in relation to sustainability, we normally think about how we can harness it for energy, but there’s more to light than just solar panels. Think about how you use light in your home.

A great tip is to make sure your fridge is not standing in direct sunlight – if so, it’s working harder to stay cool, and you’re paying the cost. It also costs to hover at the fridge door as you make up your mind on what to have – try to decide before you open the door! Also, did you know that 10% of energy can be saved on heating costs in the winter by simply opening the blinds to let in sunlight? Give it a go!

3. Be more water aware
Conserving water is one of the most important ways to help the planet and live more sustainably. There are small day-to-day changes you can make to ease yourself in, like turning off the taps when you’re brushing your teeth (this is also a great way to make sure you spend enough time brushing), or only planting in the garden plants that require minimum watering.

Alternatively, you could take the plunge and invest in something more technical like a rainwater harvesting system, which allows you to catch and use rainwater. In India, our Wellness factory does this very thing. The whole factory! So why not you?

4. Adopt a sustainable beauty approach
One step towards making your home more sustainable is to evaluate the beauty products you currently have on your dresser. Consider adopting a more sustainable beauty approach, and start selecting beauty and skin care products that aren’t detrimental to the environment and have been created using sustainable methods. Check out the Milk & Honey Smoothing Sugar Scrub – a smoothing scrub that contains only natural exfoliants to keep unnecessary plastic out of our waterways!

5. Do some research!
No one particularly enjoys evaluating and changing energy suppliers – we’d prefer to deal with this as little as possible. But this is a simple way to potentially cut costs and make your home more sustainable. The next time you’re killing time on your phone, why not do some digging into renewable energy providers and get a couple of quotes? Make the switch to a green energy supplier and you can be proud to live in a home that uses 100% renewable electricity! It might seem high an unattainable target, but we do this in all of our operated buildings worldwide! High-five!
